Coleman Campers

This slogan of the Coleman Company in the ‘50’s was no understatement. Founded in Kingfisher, Oklahoma by W.C.Coleman at the turn of the last century, the company commenced operations as a lighting service. In 1901 Coleman bought the patent for an ‘Efficient Lamp’. Dissatisfied with its performance, he worked tirelessly to improve the invention till he developed a multi-fuel product that provided more light than any other on the market. World War I boosted the fortunes of the company when the U.S.Government declared the lamp as an ‘essential war item’. The success of this product was the precursor of what was to become Coleman’s camping business.

Post-war, flushed with funds, the company focused on expanding its product line with a multitude of products oriented towards adventure sports and the great outdoors. These covered a wide range of camping gear from tents to cooking stoves and sleeping bags. World War II gave another impetus, at the end of which, the company was unparalleled in the camping field.

In 1966, Coleman’s, ‘the outdoor company’, introduced campers into their vast product range generating an increase and sea change in America’s holiday travel in recreational vehicles. With unmatched quality and classic performance, synonymous with its name, and the hallmark of its success, Coleman’s trailers were more innovative, better designed and brimful with compact features. In keeping with company policy there was no compromise in safety features. By ’79, covering the whole range of campers, it was North America’s best-selling brand with highly-comfortable, self-contained units capable of being towed by smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles. Coleman’s success was augmented by top-of-the-line back-up service and assured high re-sale value.

In ’89 Coleman sold the design and patents to Fleetwood, licensing it to use the Coleman name on their campers.
